Happy ending

Thomasville blasts Pelham

Mark Lastinger

THOMASVILLE — The book on the Thomasville Bulldogs’  disappointing 2012 season ended with a victorious chapter.

The Bulldogs, out of the playoffs for the first time since 1998, beat the Pelham Hornets 41-0 at Veterans Memorial Stadium Friday night to close with a 3-7 mark.

Thomasville dominated from the outset, racking up 21 points during a three-minute stretch of the first quarter.

Mario Cherry tallied the initial touchdown on a nifty 35-yard run at the 3:55 mark. Less than two minutes later, Jay Bowdry raced for a 55-yard score on a punt return. The final score of the early frenzy came via a 1-yard run by Cal King.

King’s score, preceded by a 37-yard reception by Tre Garland, was set up by a fumble recovery at the Pelham 38. The Hornets (1-9) lost a fumble earlier in the period without surrendering any points.

The Bulldogs maintained their furious scoring pace early in the second period. With 10:24 left before halftime, Khalil Hill stepped in front of a Clarence Almond pass and raced 50 yards for a touchdown.

Thomasville ran the two-minute drill to perfection en route to its fifth touchdown. Starting at its 35 with 1:32 left in the half, it got off 10 plays. The last one was a 9-yard touchdown grab by Tre Garland with no time left. He jumped for the ball and ripped it from a defender.
