Speed, physicality, intelligence on the football field — Cairo has it all. At least that's the way Mary Persons head coach Brian Nelson sees it.
The first-year head coach had nothing but compliments for his team's opponent in Friday's second round of the Class AAAA playoffs. They will collide in Cairo.
“I think they look extremely well coached,” Nelson said. “They've got some good speed. They've got a couple of quality running backs. Of course, those kids turn over and play linebacker. It's a definite challenge. They look pretty good.”
The Syrupmakers' defense is what has Nelson most concerned. A unit known traditionally for its tremendous speed, it has not disappointed. It features swift linebackers P.J. Davis and Jeremiah Hill, and end Ernest Battle.
“You watch them on tape, they fly around and are physical. They run to the football so well,” Nelson said. “I think probably, without a doubt, they'll be the quickest, fastest, most physical defense we've played this year.”
