THOMASVILLE — The Thomasville Lady Bulldogs tasted defeat for the first time Saturday night.

Unfortunately for Thomasville fans, the loss also came in the championship game of the Holiday Hoopfest.

Playing talented Redan, Thomasville fell behind 18-4, trailed 28-8 in the second quarter and lost 77-54.

“They pulled away by the end of the first quarter,” Thomasville coach Thomas McAboy said. “We came out with butterflies and nerves and got ourselves in a hole.”

McAboy even pulled his starting five near the end of the first quarter.

“We weren’t there mentally from the start,” McAboy said. “We just weren’t playing hard.”

Thomasville cut into the lead in the second quarter thanks to 3-point shooting. Haley McNeil, who finished with 11 points, buried three 3s in the second quarter. Jacqueria Dunbar added a 3-pointer. Khabriyah Brown sank two free throws that helped the Lady Bulldogs close within 30-16.

But Laney pulled away in the second half, outscoring Thomasville 35-27 after halftime.
