The Brookwood girls basketball team’s surprising run ended Friday in the round of eight in the GISA Class AAA playoffs at Stratford Academy. The Warriors fell 36-23 to Mount de Sales.
Madeleine Harrer led Brookwood, which finished its season 10-8, with 13 points and six rebounds. Peyton Patterson added four points and four rebounds, while Maddie Eason, Isabella Piazza and Valley Smith all finished with two points.
“We played the best defense we’ve played all year,” Brookwood coach Brad Piazza said. “They were certainly favored by a large margin coming in and we actually had our chances late.
“Overall, it was a great team effort.”
The Warriors, who trailed by 10 at halftime, remained within eight points of Mount de Sales until the final two minutes when they were forced to foul. Brookwood also missed a handful of easy shots late, according to Piazza.
Still, with Piazza taking over the reins of the Brookwood girls team just this season, he was proud of the way the Warriors acclimated themselves to the changes.
“We talked about it after the game that we had a new coach with a new system and new demands and there was some wondering about how they’d respond,” he said. “They responded well.
“We were picked to finish last in our region and finished third. If you had asked people at the start of the season if we’d be here as one of the last eight teams standing in the state, you’d have gotten a lot of nos.”
