Revisiting the dream

THOMASVILLE — First Missionary Baptist Church will conduct a Sunday program commemorating the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s  “I Have a Dream” speech.

The event will take place at First Missionary Baptist Church at 4 p.m. Sunday, following a march from nearby downtown Thomasville to the 110 W. Calhoun St. church.

Parking for participants will be near First Missionary Baptist along North Broad Street.

“It is very important for people to gather before 4 p.m.,” a spokesman said.

First Missionary Baptist Church, established in 1853, is one of Thomasville’s oldest churches. During the civil rights movement of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, FMBC was a local hub of organized marches, outreach efforts and peaceful protests.

In recognition of the events held decades ago, participants will meet at the Thomas County Courthouse, 225 N. Broad St., at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The spokesman said participants will join hands, sing praises to God and pray together as they walk the five blocks from the courthouse to the church.

Intersections between the courthouse and the church will be closed to accommodate the march.

See Sunday's edition for more details.
