Paper chase

Four arrested for stealing newspapers

THOMASVILLE — Police and a newspaper carrier set up surveillance on newspaper boxes and caught four people paying for one paper and taking extras, an officer said.

Carriers for the Times-Enterprise and Tallahassee Democrat reported the activity to police.

“They were not being properly compensated for the papers,” said Lt. Eric Hampton, Thomasville Police Department public information officer.

Police had a store in the 1500 block of East Jackson Street under surveillance when an officer saw a woman put money in a paper box and take more than one paper.

The officer followed the woman to a business in the 2000 block of Smith Avenue.

“When he followed her to the other location, he saw her take more papers from a box,” Hampton said.

The woman, Toni Canady, 49, was accompanied by her husband, Vasco Canady, 53, both of 173 Sugarwood Lane. Both were charged with theft by taking.

Hampton said police were watching when William McAllister, 39, 187 Sycamore Lane, paid for one newspaper and took several at a store in the 2600 block of East Pine Tree Boulevard.

A newspaper carrier was watching when Kimberly Lynn Little, 37, 14300 Ga. 188, Coolidge, paid for one paper and took two, Hampton said.

McAllister and Little also are charged with theft by taking.
