Ag department gets new best friend

THOMASVILLE — he Thomas County Central High School Agriculture Department has a new best friend of the animal variety: Delilah the goat.

Last year, the department got a special gift when a student brought in a two-week-old goat to raise until the closing of the school year.  From bottle feeding to bellowing calls that would convince students to let him out of his pen during class, this goat named Poncho definitely made an impact.

However, at the end of the school year, Poncho was sent away. Students definitely felt his absence, having no one to take outside to run and jump. This goat had worked his way into the hearts of the students.

“Poncho taught us what it was like to live on a farm,” said local student CJ McCann, who is on the Central meat judging team. “Not many kids get to see a goat on a daily basis because of their location in the city or (they’re) just not able to have animals, so it was neat to play with a goat and learn about them in school.”

This year, the students and Animal Science teacher Robbie Harrison knew that getting another goat would be a given after all the attention and success that Poncho received.

“Having hands-on experience with live animals helps engage students and apply real-life experience to the working world,” Harrison said. “It helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry practices.”

Terry Davis, a local goat farmer and Cairo business owner, was contacted. He and his grandson, Bryan Davis, member of the Central FFA and Farm Business Management team, picked a “Mama goat” that was due soon. However, this goat delivered two weeks early and an extremely small premature goat was born.

She was brought to the school and is being bottled fed by students. She quickly got named Delilah. She is on the upside of being premature and is doing exceptionally well, students said. Delilah is already becoming a member of the school’s ag family and a student best friend.
