LIVING IN FEAR

THOMASVILLE — Nov. 2 started normally for Gary Johnson and wife, Dorris Hill. Unfortunately, it ended up being the worst day of their lives.

After a man knocked on their door and asked for cigarette, Johnson asked him to leave. Johnson found the cigarette request to be odd, but he and Hill are visited by people in the community on a daily basis. They couple opens its doors and helps the needy by feeding, clothing and assisting people through their outreach ministry, The Brotherhood of Love Inc.

Johnson became suspicious.

A few minutes later, his doorbell started ringing incessantly. He peeped out his drawn shades and recognized the man who had previously asked for a cigarette.

“When I opened the door and was talking to him, he was just standing there and wouldn’t respond,” Johnson said. “By then, two guys had jumped up on the porch with ski masks and both had weapons. One of them had an AK-47, and the other had a machine gun. The guy I was talking to on the porch immediately pulled out a pistol.”

Seconds later, Johnson had an AK-47 being held against his head. The gunman ordered him to the floor.
