Pebble Hill to host art exhibit

THOMASVILLE — Pebble Hill Plantation, located at 1251 U.S. 319, will host a special art exhibit on Sunday

Some of Ogden Minton Pleissner’s art work will be on display for the public.

Pleissner was born on April 29, 1905, in Brooklyn, N.Y. A friend gave him a paint box filled with a wide array of colors that started his artistic career when he was only 11.

Growing up, Pleissner spent several summers in Wyoming where he sketched from life and developed a lifelong love of the outdoors, fishing and the western landscape.

From 1922 until 1926, Pleissner attended the Art Students League of New York with Frank DuMond. He began teaching at the Pratt Institute soon afterward.

Throughout the 1930s, he worked mainly in oils and became known for his Western landscapes and images of the Maritimes and New England.

The artist was considered a realist unimpeded by sentimentality. Pleissner’s contentment in his surroundings, interest in the world around him and his satisfaction with the craft can be seen in the masterful use of light and color that pervades his paintings.

He died in 1983 in London. In the years since his death, Pleissner’s work has become quite popular among collectors of American sporting art and other genres of tangible Americana.

Pleissner was a personal friend of Parker and Elisabeth Poe, former Pebble Hill Plantation owners. One work of art by Pleissner remains at Pebble Hill. They owned several pieces and some were donated to the Thomasville Center for the Arts by the Poes. The exhibit will display the works that were donated. Betty C. Neill is also loaning one of Pleissner’s pieces.

His works in both oil and watercolor are highly regarded, and his paintings consistently command a respectable price at auction.

The Pleissner Art Exhibit Reception will be Sunday from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. in the Elisabeth Ireland Poe Gallery, located on the upper floor of the Main House at Pebble Hill Plantation. Admission is free.
