TTCHS takes on $100K challenge

THOMASVILLE — The Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society (TTCHS) has been named one of 50 shelters in the country — and two in Georgia — to compete in the fifth and final ASPCA

Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.

The TTCHS is competing for a chance at more than $600,000 in grant funding, including a grand prize of $100,000.

The $100K Challenge is a nationwide competition for animal shelters and their communities aimed at getting more animals adopted or returned to owners than ever before.

“If we achieve the greatest increase in lives saved this June, July and August, compared to the other challengers, we win a $100,000 grant from the ASPCA and Rachael Ray to support our continued life-saving work,” said Ed Williams, Humane Society executive director.

“If we do the best job of engaging our community in saving more lives, we win the $25,000 Community Engagement Award. And while the possibility that our shelter could win a portion of the $600,000 in grant funding is exciting, we win regardless by working with the community to save more lives,” Williams explained.

One of the Humane Society’s first exercises toward the grant was Friday and Saturday, when 39 shelter animals were adopted. In the first week of June, 47 animals were adopted.

Work began in early January to get TTCHS into the $100K Challenge. An initial application was submitted, along with pages and pages of data and supporting documentation.

“This was followed by several e-mails and telephone interviews that all culminated with notice that we had been confirmed on the ‘Wait List’ (or 11th) contestant for our division. This meant that only if another agency in our division withdrew or was disqualified from the competition prior to May 31, would we have the option of competing,” Williams said.

In total, only 10 qualifying agencies are allowed in each division, with five divisions, and 50 challengers.

The Humane Society learned several weeks ago it had been

accepted as one of the final 50 shelters.

Said Williams, “We immediately began to implement our plan to save more lives.”

Adoption fees are being reduced to $25 during adoption events.

“We encourage everyone to visit the shelter and help us spread the word. Community involvement will be the key to our success,” Williams said.

The TTCHS staff, volunteers, and supporters are eager to get started on a successful campaign to attract additional volunteers, supporters and adopters.

“Follow us on Facebook (facebook.com/thomasvillehumane). Help us increase our “Likes” and give us high marks in the Reviews section. Share posts of our adoptable and found animals. Send everyone you know to the adoption pages of our website (www.thomasvillehumane.org),” Williams said.
