Lewis honored to run

THOMASVILLE — Jami Lyn Lewis prides herself in being the first woman to run for State Court judge in Grady County.

She said, “It’s a big honor and responsibility — and I take it seriously.”

Along with having an attorney partnership at Harrell and Lewis, LCC., in Camilla, the 31-year-old attorney works part-time at as a Paralegal Studies instructor at Bainbridge State College in Bainbridge.

Lewis began her law career in Bainbridge by working with the public defenders office for six years. Later, she decided to open her own practice, which has been a success. It practices family and criminal law.

It is because of her experience and compassion for family and criminal law that caused her to consider the State Court of Grady County judicial post.

“I considered it for several months. I believe I’m the best person for the job even though I’ve not practiced law as long as the other candidates. However, I have more experience in the type of law that will be presented to the State Court judge. I have the right judicial temperament, and I also feel I have an obligation to do this job,” said Lewis.

If elected, one of the first things on her list of changes is to implement an incentive program for youthful and first-time offenders. The program could shave time off of probation or decrease fines.

“The program would be an incentive to get through their sentence quicker while meeting their needs. We need to address the problem, not just pay a fine, etc.,” said Lewis.

Lewis also wants to increase the court’s efficiency.

She said, “I’ve talked to the courts in bigger places to learn how to find ways to save the county money in the long run.”

The attorney’s ultimate goal is to make it so people in the system do not feel intimidated by the person judging them.

“I want to make people not feel intimidated and that they know someone cares about what happens to them. I want them to know I care about them going down the right path. My career has shown that’s what I’m about,” said Lewis.

She concluded, “We all raise our families together. We work, go to church — and no one is immune to something to bring them to the court. They need to be treated with respect and dignity. I don’t think I’m better than anyone. There’s a reason why people are in the situation they are in. If I’m not elected to this position, I’m worried about what could happen to these people.”
