Garden club seeking ‘Camellias of Thomasville’

Staff report

THOMASVILLE —  Members of the local garden clubs that make up Thomasville Garden Club Inc. are getting ready for the 2013 Thomasville Camellia Show. They need your help.

If you have any of the “Camellias of Thomasville” in your garden, you can help this annual community event by providing a blossom to display at the show to be held Saturday, Feb. 9th from 1:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. at the Thomasville Garden Center.

One of the highlights planned for this year’s show will be a display of “Camellias of Thomasville.”Many do not know that more than 70 varieties of camellias were developed by citizens right here in Thomasville. From the oldest locally registered camellia (1935, Mrs. F.L. Gibson) to the most recent variety (2010, Walker Lewis), camellias developed here have made our city highly esteemed by the American Camellia Society for our contribution to this beautiful flower.
