Relief From the Streets founder earns degree

THOMASVILLE — Rico Walker of Thomasville graduated on May 10  from Bainbridge State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology.

Walker considers obtaining his degree from college a major accomplishment.

He said, “As I marched inside of the auditorium with my fellow 2014 Bainbridge State College classmates, I could remember all the obstacles that I overcame to get to that very moment.”

According to Walker, people told him he would never make it.

At the young age of nine, he was forced to live on the streets.

“I knew God had a better purpose and plans for my life. After living on the streets and taking care of myself since the age of nine, being in and out of the juvenile justice system and going to prison, I found myself walking across a stage before my family, friends and colleagues,” said Walker.

He considers himself an example that regardless of one’s past, they can become anything that they set their mind to when God is placed first and working hard.

Walker said, “I got out of the negative environment that I was in and surrounded myself around positive people that were going in the same direction that I was going, and look at what I’ve achieved.”

Walker is the founder of Relief From the Streets Inc. in Thomasville. Through the non-profit organization, he strives to encourage boys and young men to be the best they can be.

“I hope the young people will look at my life and see that regardless of their past, their future can shine bright if they pray hard, work hard and keep God first. Life is about choices — good or bad. You have to deal with the consequences. Your past doesn’t define you. You can still rise up from it and move forward to success,” said Walker.
