THOMASVILLE — After stopping a truck traveling during predawn hours with no headlights on, a Thomas County deputy noticed a second situation.

A stop sign at the site of the traffic stop — U.S. 19 North and Egg and Butter Road — lay on the ground with a chain attached to it. The deputy asked what happened to the sign.

Michael Bass, 19, 2505 Rook Road, a passenger in the truck, said he and Caleb Storey, 18, 1263 Egg and Butter Road, driver of the vehicle, tied one end of the chain to the sign, the other end to the truck and pulled down the sign.

A sheriff’s office incident report shows the officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on Storey’s breath and that the driver’s speech was slurred.

Both teens are charged with interference with government property. Storey also is charged with driving under the influence.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will be contacted about replacing the sign.
