Troopers wise to nighttime violators

THOMASVILLE — Thomasville Post 12 Georgia State Patrol troopers are wise to motorists who do not abide by car seat or safety belt laws at night.

For that reason, troopers are conducting nighttime road checks in an effort to curtail the illegal activity.

Violations have been on the increase after dark for about two months, said Sgt. First Class Tommy Peeples, Post 12 commander.

In nighttime road checks, troopers have encountered three- and four-year-olds not in child seats or in seats but not restrained. In those situations if a wreck occurred, a child — or a child and seat — would be tossed around in the vehicle and possibly ejected.

The penalty for a first offense of child seat violation is a fine of up to $50 and one point on the violator’s drivers license. The second conviction carries a fine of up o $100 and two points on the drivers license.

Peeples said children under age 12 should ride in the back seat of a vehicle.

“Air bags can be very dangerous to a child. They come out so hard and so fast and can cause injury to a child,” Peeples explained.

A correctly installed child seat should not move more than one inch from side to side.

Children under eight should be in an approved car seat or booster seat in the back seat.

“The booster seat or child seat needs to be appropriate for the child’s weight and height,” Peeples said.

Seats should be installed according to manufacturer’s instructions to ensure safety.

Peeples said a certified technician is available at the GSP post on the north bypass — next to Thomas County Central High School — to show parents how to properly install the seats.
