NCAA honors Central grad

AUGUSTA — In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Division II athletics within the NCAA, the Division II Conference Commissioners Association joined the NCAA to select a 40th Anniversary Tribute Team. The Tribute Team recognizes 49 former Division II student-athletes from the 23 conferences that were active during the 2012-13 school year.

Paine College’s associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator, Selina Bynum Kohn, was named to the team as one of two representatives from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). On Jan. 16, Kohn received her award at the 2014 NCAA Convention in San Diego, Calif.

Kohn joined Morehouse graduate and Olympian Edwin Moses as the SIAC’s representatives on the Tribute Team. Kohn is a native of Thomasville where she graduated from Central High School after having been a member of the softball, basketball, and track and field teams. She then attended Albany State University where she majored in biology and was a member of the basketball team. As a Lady Ram, Kohn helped her team to win the 1990 SIAC championship and she graduated having set five NCAA Division II assist records and having received Albany State’s Most Valuable Player award three times and the 1991 ESPN Black College Female Player of the Year Award.

Kohn became Division II’s all-time leader in assists and she set a single-season record of 309 assists that still stands today. To date, no player has beaten her 11.9 assists per game average from the 1992 season either. She has since been inducted into the Thomas County Sports Hall of Fame and the Paine College Hall of Fame.

“I’ve been able to not only be a Division II student-athlete, but also a coach and an athletics administrator,” stated Kohn. “And when I think about my experiences, if I had to sum them up into one word, I would use “legendary.”

Since starting her career as a coach at Albany State in 1994, Kohn has helped basketball and volleyball teams, and student-athletes to numerous SIAC championships and conference awards at her alma mater and Paine. Now, she devotes her time to the academic success and behind-the-scenes progress of Paine’s student-athletes and the Paine Athletics Department as a whole as an athletics administrator. She also serves as advisor to Paine’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

“We are honored to have Selina working with us,” said director of athletics Tim Duncan. “Her talents, leadership and dedication are felt by all involved with Paine Athletics. She is truly deserving of this award.”
