Cops put toilet paper suspect under wraps

THOMASVILLE — The downtown Thomasville toilet paper caper might have come to an end early Thursday morning when a suspect was flushed from the building.

For several months, thefts have occurred at the Business Exchange, 125 N. Broad St., during nighttime hours.

Police have responded to incidents and patrolled, but to no avail.

In addition to toilet paper, toiletries and food were taken, and a microwave oven was used to heat food.

“What’s kind of ironic is the owners of the building were surveilling themselves and thought someone was in the business and called police,” said Lt. Wade Glover, commander of the Thomasville Police Department Criminal Investigations Division.

As responding officers entered the building at 1 a.m. Thursday, a man went out the back door and was arrested.

The suspect, Grady Daniel Woodard, 51, told police he is homeless and was looking for a place to stay.

Glover said Woodard has been sleeping in the five-story Business Exchange basement area and most likely walking around the city during the day.

Woodard is charged with two counts of burglary and possession of burglary tools.

Glover said the suspect was prying open locks on doors to gain entry to various areas of the building at night.

Senior reporter Patti Dozier can be reached at (229) 226-2400, ext. 1820.
