Florida lawmen join theft probe

THOMASVILLE — Personnel from a Florida state attorney’s office and two Florida law enforcement agencies joined a Tuesday search that led local authorities to lawn equipment stolen during the weekend from the Thomas-Grady Service Center on Plantation Oak Drive.

A 1993 Chevrolet Suburban and a trailer taken in the incident were discovered by Thomas County Sheriff’s Office deputies Monday afternoon at the Georgia/Florida line south of Metcalfe.

Sheriff’s office investigators and Thomasville police detectives joined forces and met with personnel from the Tallahassee, Fla., office of State Attorney Willie Meggs on Tuesday.

“Some of their people knew some of the players in this theft ring,” said Lt. Tim Watkins, sheriff’s office chief investigator.

Sheriff’s investigators, Thomasville detectives, state attorney’s office personnel and officers from Leon County and Jefferson County sheriffs’ offices in Florida joined forces in the search, which led to near Lloyd, Fla., in Jefferson County.

“We went to a residence, but the items were on the back of that property,” Watkins explained. Authorities do not know who lives at the residence, but Watkins said they are relatives of suspects in the case.

The stolen goods were found in an enclosed trailer stolen in Tallahassee.

While lawmen were at the Lloyd site, Wakulla County, Fla., officers arrived to recover stolen boat motors.

Watkins said his agency recovered stolen property from the same area last year.

Lt. Wade Glover, commander of the Thomasville Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, said 90 percent of the items stolen from the Service Center have been recovered.

No arrests have been made.

“The investigation is continuing,” Glover said.
