Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Pine Park has a rare treasure within it congregation— two faithful members who turned 100 years old this year.
On Sunday, the church will be honoring their two oldest members —Bernice Smith Trutlin and Picola Davis Donald — with a celebratory program.
Trutlin was born on May 31, 1914, in Boston but was raised in Pine Park by a great aunt. She was the oldest child of the family with two brothers and two sisters.
“I grew up on a farm and it was hard work. After the farm, I moved to town and did house work. I also did a lot of sewing for people,” she said.
For 15 years, Trutlin worked for Uniforms for Industry. She retired in 1970.
On May 28, 1932, she married William Trutlin and the couple raised a family of five children — Delois, Bettye, Frances, Hayward and Viola.
According to her, turning 100 is not too much different than any other age.
She joked, “I don’t feel no different. My bones ache, but I feel all right.”
For more than 80 years, Trutlin has been a dedicated member of Mount Nebo.
“I joined the church before 1920, but I can’t remember the exact date,” she said.
During that time, she has served as the treasurer of missions, attended Sunday School and been an overall faithful member.
Trutlin’s favorite song and one that she has lived by is “Try Jesus.” Her hobbies include fishing, gardening and sewing.
She has lived in eight houses and three towns. She has had a husband, six children, eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild.
Mount Nebo’s other oldest faithful member is Picola Davis, who was born on March 4, 1914, in Grady County. She was also raised in Pine Park where she married Leroy Donald and raised seven children — Leroy Donald Jr., Billy Donald, Lilly Tucker, Rev. Willie Donald, Dororthy Smith, Martha Carter and Bobby Donald.
At an early age, Davis joined Mount Nebo and has served throughout her life by living through her favorite song, “Walk with Me Jesus.”
The community is invited to honor the ladies on their 100th birthday celebration at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the church located at 232 Mount Nebo Lane.
