Memorial 5K slated for former Southside principal

Staff report

THOMASVILLE —  Students, faculty, staff and parents of Southside Elementary School in Cairo are planning a memorial 5K Run/Walk and Children’s Fun Run on Saturday in honor of their principal who passed away last February.

To honor the life and legacy of Principal Lateesha Faulk Clinton, the school is inviting the community to join them for the 5K run/walk. All proceeds from the event will help fund special educational projects and opportunities for Southside Elementary School students.

The current principal at Southside Elementary, Janet Walden said, “Ms. Clinton’s death was a surprise to us all — a very untimely death. This 5K is part of the healing process for the school and community. It will be a day of fun and fellowship to honor her memory.”

Registration will be from 8 a.m. until 8:50 a.m. at the Southside Elementary School lobby. At 9 a.m., the race will begin. The course will be a neighborhood course with a few gentle hills. Following the race, a Children’s Fun Run/Walk will take place on the school campus.

First-, second- and third-place trophies will be given to the top overall male and female racer. Also, awards will be given to the first- and second-place male and female finishers in specific age groups.

The entry for the race (adults and kids) will be $20 on the event day. T-shirts will be given to racers, quantities are limited.

Clinton, 39, was in her first year as principal at Southside Elementary School, having served as Southside assistant principal from 2007-2012. She had also been a student at Southside.

After teaching in the Grady County School System for 16 years, she was named Southside Teacher of the Year in 2003.
