$1,544,785 in contracts awarded for city water work

THOMASVILLE — As part of Thomasville’s ongoing initiative to enhance and expand its water infrastructure, the city awarded a contract for $1,544,785 to Blankenship Contracting of Dothan, Ala., to construct a 1,300-foot-long, 16-inch-diameter water main.

Construction, which begins Monday, is expected to be completed within about six months.

The new water main, which will connect the Pavo Road elevated water tank with the Bennett Street elevated water tank, will serve as an additional dedicated water transmission line while also providing system redundancy to the city’s water supply network.

“Two main benefits to this project are that if we encounter a problem in one area of our water network, we will have the ability reroute the water through our redundant lines and maintain the supply to our citizens and fire hydrants,” said City Engineer Jerry Pionessa.

The new water main is part of a series of water- and wastewater-related projects that total about $24.9 million in improvements.

The initiative is funded by the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority’s Drinking Water and Clean Water State Revolving Loan programs. The funding serves as a 20-year, low-interest rate loan, of which $1.5 million is eligible for principal forgiveness.

“We have a large number of improvement projects which are going on simultaneously throughout our community, including the construction of a new, deep-water well, a new water tank in the Red Hills Business Park and the construction of an additional 12-inch water main. These projects are vital as they will give our community the ability to serve future development and growth, in addition to an extra layer of protection in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise,” Pionessa said.

“While these projects take place, some roadways and public amenities may be affected,” he explained.

Areas to be affected by the new 16-inch water main include:

• Pavo Road, directly across from the elevated water tank

• Railroad crossing between Pavo Road and Commercial Drive on U.S. 19

• Railroad crossing by Publix on Pine Tree Boulevard

• Railroad crossing on Covington Avenue

• Back section of the Cherokee Lake walking trail

• Remington Avenue/Kern Street intersection

• Bennett Street, from Remington Avenue to the elevated water tank

“For the most part, construction will follow the path of the railroad as it makes its way through town,” Pionessa said. “We are going to do our best to minimize any inconvenience during this process. However, we ask that citizens plan for delays or choose alternate routes while construction is taking place.”
