Cain seeking Superior Court judgeship

THOMASVILLE — A Valdosta assistant public defender announced Tuesday he is seeking a Southern Judicial Circuit judgeship.

Jason Courtney Cain is seeking a judgeship currently held by Frank Horkan, of Moultrie. Horkan is retiring Dec. 31 and taking senior judge status.

Cain has worked in the Valdosta public defender’s office since the entity was created in 2005. He has practiced law since 1994.

His first job after college was as a Juvenile Court judge. He was an assistant district attorney in the Southern Judicial Circuit.

“I feel like I am well-qualified for the job,” he said. “I would make a good judge. I would like to take a step to the Superior Court bench.”

Cain, 48, is a Hahira native and resident. He received a juris doctor from John Marshall Law School and a master of laws from Thomas Jefferson School of Law.

He and his wife, Mitzi, a Hahira Elementary School teacher, have three children: Cameron, a Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office employee; Courtney, a pharmacy tech in Valdosta; Jasey, a student at Wiregrass Technical College.

Cain said his strong points are being able to relate to people and seeing both sides of an issue.

“I’ve seen the courtroom from all three sides. I think that experience would be beneficial and help me in being a Superior Court judge,” he said.

Important qualities of a good judge, Cain said, include fairness, a certain level of maturity and a willingness to listen to both sides of an issue.

“I’d listen to the facts presented. I would apply the applicable law, and I would not be influenced by any outside forces,” he explained.
