Cocaine stays dry during watery capture

THOMASVILLE —  A drug suspect who fled from a state trooper got wet, but the cocaine found on his person was dry.

Thomasville police responded to a fight in progress at Level 9 in the 200 block of Gordon Avenue. An officer, who saw several individuals get into a van that contained open containers of alcoholic beverages, detected the odor of marijuana coming from the van.

A Thomasville Post 12 Georgia State Patrol trooper who arrived to assist the city officer saw Wilbur Morris Battle, 26, 1226 Tom St., place a marijuana cigarette on the ground, said Kevin Lee, Thomas County/Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division commander.

Battle ran when the trooper told him to pick up the cigarette.

“(Mr.) Battle kept fleeing from officers and jumped a ditch that was connected to a holding pond,” Lee said.

Officers found 11 sealed bags of powder cocaine on Battle when he was caught.

Battle was wet, but the cocaine was dry.

The suspect is charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, cocaine possession with intent to distribute, cocaine possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a park and obstruction of officer.

When questioned by narcotics agents, Battle said he did not know what happened during the incident because he was drunk, the commander said.
