The qualifying period for candidates for local offices in Thomas and Grady counties kicked off Monday.
Seats to be filled for the Thomas County Commission and Thomas County Board of Education are districts 1, 3, 5 and 7.
The incumbent Thomas County commissioners whose seats are up for re-election are:
• District 1 — Merrill Baker
• District 3 — Ken Hickey
• District 5 — Hershel Ansley
• District 7 — Philip Brown
Philip Brown and Hickey qualified Monday.
The incumbent Thomas County Board of Education members whose seats are up for grabs are:
• District 1— Nancy Hiers
• District 3 — Charles Evans
• District 5 — David Dawson
• District 7 — Kay Streets
Dawson and Evans qualified Monday..
Qualifying in Thomas County for Democratic and Republican candidates will continue from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the atrium at the Thomas County Judicial Center, 325 N. Madison St.
Thomas County Supervisor of Elections Walter Mays said, “We still have four days left. Some are waiting until later in the week. It’s looking good so far.”
The incumbent seats for Grady County Commission are:
• District 2 — Billy Poitevint
• District 5 — T.D. David
Poitevint (Republican) qualified Monday.
Grady County Board of Education incumbents whose seats are up for re-election are:
• District 2 — Drew Pyrz
• District 5 — Dave Dumas
There were no qualifiers for Grady County Board of Education Monday.
Grady County’s State Court judge seat is up for re-election. With Bill Bass, incumbent State Court Judge being reprimanded by the Judicial Qualifications Commission in 2013, he is unable to seek re-election.
Todd Butler, Josh Bell and Jami Lewis qualified for the race on Monday.
Those seeking to run for State Court judge should qualify with Denise Maddox, Grady County probate judge and superintendent of elections, for the non-partisan office.
Also, the office of State Court solicitor general is up for grabs. Incumbent Kevin Cauley qualified Monday.
Grady County Democrats can qualify from 9 a.m., to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. until noon on Friday at the Cairo Messenger, 31 First Ave., N.E.
Republican candidates can qualify during the same hours at Rockdale Transport, 750 U.S. 84.
