THOMASVILLE — The Thomas County winner of the $50 million Mega Million jackpot got up at 5:30 Wednesday morning and about 15 minutes later checked on his computer to see who had won the windfall the night before.

Zippy Vonier compared the numbers on his lottery ticket to the winning numbers. They matched. He checked again. Again they matched. He checked again. Still a match.

Vonier called his wife, B.J., to the room and told her to sit down. He told her they had won.

“I said ‘Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I can’t believe this,” Ms. Vonier said Friday afternoon.

The Voniers, friends, relatives and coworkers gathered at Susie Q’s No. 1 on U.S. 319 North Friday afternoon for the ceremonial receipt of the money, which will be electronically transferred from the Georgia Lottery to the Vonier’s local bank in a few days.

The final tally showed the $49 million lottery win has grown by $1 million, said Wayne Watson, Georgia Lottery District manager.
