Main Street, Tourism departments to be changed

THOMASVILLE — As a result of several initiatives in the City of Thomasville’s new strategic plan, Main Street and Tourism departments are being restructured.

The updated strategic plan includes many goals related to expanded tourism and marketing, as well as greater involvement in community events and other projects, said Steve Sykes, city manager.

To meet the objectives, Sykes is expanding the role of Main Street and Tourism executive director.

Prior to restructuring, the executive director’s position, most recently held by Arline Hampton, was a department head and reported to the senior assistant city manager. Under the new structure, the position will report directly to the city manager and will take a leadership role in implementing parts of the strategic plan, Sykes said.

“The city council has a vision of refining Thomasville’s image both locally and across a wider population, and it makes sense that our Main Street and Tourism departments take responsibility for those objectives,” the city manager explained.

He said other objectives, including those related to economic development and community development, need direction and input from Main Street and Tourism.

“As we move forward with implementing the new plan, I felt it was important that I have direct supervision of the activities of the Main Street and Tourism offices,  Sykes said.”

A search by the city manager is under way to find the right candidate for the position.
