Marshall SWGTC’s GOAL winner

THOMASVILLE — Jade Marshall, a student in the Business Management program at Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC), has been named SWGTC’s Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) winner, or Student of the Year, for 2014. Marshall was announced as the winner at the Jan 31 Thomasville Kiwanis Club Meeting.

GOAL, which was established in 1971 by the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG), is an award that focuses on student excellence in technical education through academic excellence and personal achievement. According to Ellen Terrell, SWGTC GOAL coordinator, instructors select students based on their leadership skills, academic accomplishments, career goals, and personal goals.

Neil Clements, SWGTC Business Management Program director and Marshall’s nominating instructor commented, “I nominated Jade because she excels in academics, consistently exhibits leadership qualities, and has impeccable moral character. Throughout my program she has truly grown both personally and professionally. She has gone from being a shy teenager to a confident young woman with tremendous abilities and vision. I am confident that Jade will succeed in anything that she puts her mind to, and am honored I’ve had the opportunity to teach her! ”

Marshall, a native of Cairo, Georgia, is set to complete her Associate of Applied Science Degree in Business Management in May 2014.

Upon being named SWGTC’s GOAL winner, Marshall said, “Being selected as the 2014 GOAL Winner feels amazing. I am very excited and truly honored to have this great opportunity. Thank you to my instructor, Neil Clements, for believing in my abilities and nominating me for this award. I am looking forward to representing Southwest Georgia Technical College and promoting the importance of technical education."

While at SWGTC, Marshall has been a very successful student. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her time at the college, even while balancing her schoolwork with a full-time job. She has made President’s List four times, was named Student of the Semester for Summer Semester 2013 and was a GOAL finalist in 2013. As part of her program, Marshall also completed a semester-long internship at Sweet Grass Dairy in Thomasville where she assisted with their social media and marketing efforts.

After graduation, she plans on continuing her career with her current employer, Citizens Bank of Cairo. She started as a teller at Citizens in February 2013, and was quickly promoted to a loan processor position in July.

Although she is extremely modest, Marshall is not new to winning. Since December 2012 when she entered her first pageant, Marshall has won five pageants and placed in two others. Her titles include Miss Grady County Forestry 2013, Miss Syrup City Southland 2013, Miss Georgia Snowflake 2014, Miss Miracle 2014, and Miss Dougherty-Lee County Forestry 2014.

The GOAL competition is held at three levels: local (each college selects a winner), regional, and state. On the local level, each college in the TCSG selects one student to be their college’s GOAL winner.

In January, Marshall, along with the three other finalists, made presentations to a panel of judges known as the selection committee. This committee, which was comprised of local business and community leaders, was tasked with the tough job of selecting SWGTC’s best student. They evaluated each student on their leadership abilities, academic achievement, knowledge of technical education, and educational and career goals. After interviewing and evaluating all finalists, the selection committee chose Marshall as the winner.

As SWGTC’s GOAL winner, Marshall will represent the College in the regional level of the GOAL competition. At regionals, GOAL winners from each of the 24 technical colleges throughout Georgia vie for one of only nine spots as a finalist. These nine regional finalists will compete for the state GOAL title in Atlanta on April 23. The state-level winner will be designated as TCSG’s state GOAL winner and will serve as a state-wide representative and ambassador of technical education in Georgia for 2014. A new car will also be awarded to the State GOAL winner, who will make appearances throughout the year promoting technical education.

The Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) sponsors the state-wide GOAL competition, and the Thomasville Kiwanis Club and the SWGTC Student Council are local sponsors.
