THOMASVILLE — Johnny Bannister has vacated his seat on the Thomas County Board of Education after 22 years of service.

In a letter to the superintendent and school board, Bannister said he has moved from his previous residence in School Board District 5 and relocated outside the district.

Bannister was elected to the school board in November 1990, and took office in January 1991. He was most recently re-elected in November 2010 for a term scheduled to run January 2011 to December 2014. Bannister served as chairman of the board for five of the 22 years he was on the panel.

In keeping with Georgia law, remaining board members named a replacement to fill the remainder of Bannister’s term.

“Mr. Bannister told me about a year ago that he had purchased property outside his district, and he planned to eventually move onto that new property. The timing of his move was dependent on the sale of his existing residence, and we did not know when that would occur,” said Superintendent Dr. Dusty Kornegay.

“Bannister closed on the sale of his residence, moved out of his district in December and notified me and the board chairman accordingly,” Kornegay added.

Replacing Bannister is David Dawson.

Dawson is a native of Valdosta. He has lived in Thomasville since 1999.
