Heart health topic of Thursday talk

THOMASVILLE —  February is National Heart Health Month, and it’s a great time to refocus efforts on keeping your heart healthy.

And the good news is a few simple changes can have a big impact.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that people who have a healthy heart in middle age may have a life expectancy that’s up to 14 years longer than people who have at least two risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity or smoking.

“Heart disease is the number one killer in the country and in the world,” said Archbold cardiologist Bill Ellis, MD.  “Unfortunately people often don’t connect important risk factors, such as poor diet, smoking and physical inactivity with heart disease and stroke, but making these lifestyle changes before you develop a chronic condition such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol is critical.”

As part of Archbold Memorial Hospital’s continuing Health Talk free community lecture series, Ellis will present, “Live Healthier; Live Longer: How a Heart Healthy Life May Extend Life Expectancy” on Thursday.  The talk is offered free as a clinical outreach effort to uphold Archbold’s core value of Community Benefit.

Ellis will discuss how making heart healthy lifestyle choices may increase the number of years you feel healthy. He will also discuss risk factors associated with heart disease and stroke, and treatments currently available and treatment options on the horizon for cardiology.

Ellis is board certified in cardiology and practices at Cardiology Consultants of South Georgia. To learn more about heart health, please attend this Health Talk. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. and be held in the Williams Auditorium East Tower at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Dinner will be served. Pre-registration is requested; call 229-227-5140 or visit www.archbold.org.
