A miracle cousin

Perlman to raise CMN funds in honor of Thomas

THOMASVILLE — Valwood School freshman Addy Perlman of Valdosta remembers when her cousin, Ella Clare Thomas of Thomasville, was born eight weeks premature with three holes in her heart.

She underwent several surgeries with resulting complications.

According to Melissa Thomas, Ella Clare’s mother, “Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) is largely responsible for saving Ella Clare’s life. When Ella Clare had pneumonia, CMN sent a helicopter to Archbold Medical Center to transport Ella Claire to Shands. Ella Clare is five years old now and doing well.”

CMN supports research and training, purchases equipment and pays for uncompensated care, all in support of their mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible.

Perlman says, “It was during my cousin’s illness that I first became familiar with the Children’s Miracle Network.” Interested in learning more and finding a way to help the organization, she attended the Valdosta State University (VSU) Blazer-a-thon, a dance marathon that benefits CMN.

“I saw what the Blazer-a-thon was doing for CMN and I decided that I wanted to bring a dance marathon to Valwood.”

With the help of Sara Whetsell of Thomasville, director of the VSU Blazer-a-thon, Perlman gathered information and began planning the event.

“I asked senior Kate Evans and sophomore Emily Pascavage to help me form committees to plan the event. Their hard work along with the other committee members’ is really going to make this happen,” said Perlman.

Participants will be dancing, playing games and standing continually throughout the evening to raise funds in support of hospitalized children who are fighting for their lives and are unable to play and dance.

To me, the dance marathon is more than a party.  We will be thinking of the kids every moment of the dance, and when our legs get tired we will go on because of the kids who cannot stretch their legs.” says Perlman.

The event is March 8, at Valwood School in the Rodgers Performance Hall. Anyone interested in making a donation may write a check payable to Children’s Miracle Network and mail it to Valwood School, 4380 Old U.S. Hwy 41, Hahira, Ga. 31632.
