ART START

THOMASVILLE — The City of Thomasville, in collaboration with the Center for the Arts and Landmarks, will hold a three-day community design planning session known as a charrette to establish a master plan for the newly proposed Arts District in downtown Thomasville.

The charrette, set to take place Friday through March 9, will be an intensive planning session where citizens, business owners, property owners, developers, designers and others collaborate on a vision for future development of this culturally rich area. Participants will be asked to provide input on a variety of issues impacting the area, including a first-of-its-kind multi-use walking and bicycling trail and trailhead.

“We are looking forward to working through this collaborative process. The Madison Street TE project was a first step in bridging Broad Street to the West Jackson Street business district.  With plans for the Trail Head and Amphitheater still in their infancy, the charette gives citizens, local businesses, property owners and others a voice in the future development of downtown Thomasville,” said Thomasville Mayor Max Beverly.

The charrette will take place at Building 209, 209 Remington Ave. On Friday, the event begins with an informal Introduction Meeting and Walking Tour at 2:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. followed by a Kickoff Workshop beginning at 6 p.m- 8 p.m. The event will continue on Saturday with a Studio Session which is open to the public from 3 p.m.-5 p.m.  On March 9, the charrette continues with a Studio Session which is open to the public from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. and the weekend of planning concludes with an Open House and Overview Presentation from 1 p.m.-2 p.m.

“We are excited about this event and look forward to hearing input from the community about the proposed Arts District. We encourage everyone to join us as we develop the plans for this area,” said Brian Herrmann, Thomasville city planner.

The concepts developed as a result of the charrette process will guide the City as it looks to spur new investment and development that is both mindful of the area’s history, yet filled with creative expression and enterprise.

Everyone is welcome.
