A 22-year-old man taken into custody after a car and foot chase told lawmen he ingested Xanax while on the run.
Thomas County/Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division agents set up surveillance on Patten Speedway Road after learning Donald Austin Prevatt, 9824 Ga. 122, would deliver Xanax and possibly methamphetamine to a location on the dirt road.
Soon, officers saw the older-model green Jeep Cherokee they had been told Prevatt would be driving.
“We positioned our car so he couldn’t go around us,” said Kevin Lee, narcotics/vice commander. “He went through a field around us.”
Lee said the Jeep wrecked in a ditch as the vehicle came back onto the dirt road, but continued to flee.
The vehicle, traveling 60 to 65 miles per hour, turned onto Ga. 122, traveled through a church parking lot, onto Patten-Coolidge Road, dirt Ponder Road and Dillon Road.
“We lost him for a couple of minutes at Clyde Griffin (Road) and Dillon,” Lee explained.
Meanwhile, a Thomas County Sheriff’s Office deputy continued pursuit of the Jeep, which traveled onto the dirt portion of Centennial Road.
Agents were positioned at Centennial and Enon roads.
“He almost hit agents. We had to jump out of his way,” the commander said.
Prevatt wrecked on Mary Owens Road, when the Jeep went into a ditch and became stuck.
The passenger was removed from the vehicle, and Prevatt fled on foot, Lee said.
The suspect ran across U.S. 319 North and into woods, where he was apprehended.
Prevatt told narcotics agents he had ingested Xanax, a prescription anti-anxiety drug, while running.
The suspect was jailed and apparently suffered no repercussions from ingesting the drug.
Prevatt, who was denied bond, is charged with aggravated assault on police officers, felony eluding police, numerous traffic offenses and fleeing.
Lee said it is fortunate most of the chase — during the noon hour Friday — took place on dirt roads and did not endanger traffic.
The passenger in the Prevatt vehicle was not charged. The commander said the individual was “visibly upset.”
