Archbold offering free colorectal cancer screenings Friday

THOMASVILLE — According to the American Cancer Society, one in twenty people will develop cancer in their lifetime, and men tend to be at higher risk for the disease. It’s one of the more common cancers seen at the Singletary Oncology Center each year and is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States among men and women.

“About nine out of 10 people diagnosed with colorectal cancer are at least 50 years old,” said Brian E. Gaupp, Archbold medical oncologist. “In addition to age, other risk factors include personal history of inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, smoking and heavy alcohol use, as well as family history of colorectal cancer and polyps.”

Experts say the death rate from colon cancer has dropped over the last 20 years, and they credit improvements in treatment for the disease. But early detection of the disease through regular colorectal cancer screenings contribute to cancers being found earlier, when the disease is easier to cure.

On Friday, Archbold will offer free screenings from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Singletary Oncology Center.

Free take-home colorectal cancer screening kits will be available during the event and throughout the month of March for those with a personal history of polyps, a family history of colorectal cancer or those who are 50 years of age and older who have not had the same screening in the last two years. Other screenings offered Friday include cholesterol and glucose screenings (blood sample) and blood pressure/height/weight/BMI.

Tests and results will be provided free to participants as a clinical outreach effort supporting Archbold’s core value of Community Benefit.

All screenings will be offered on a walk-in basis. For more information on this screening event, call (229) 584-5520.
