Monahan ‘overwhelmed’

THOMASVILLE — A longtime Thomas County government employee wept before hundreds on a big-screen monitor Friday night.

The tears were shed by Twink Monahan, Thomas County Commission clerk, upon being named the state’s top county clerk.

The Georgia County Clerk’s Association named Monahan the association’s 2014 Clerk of the Year for outstanding performance and professionalism in government.

The award was presented at the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) annual meeting in Savannah.

“I was totally overwhelmed,” Monahan told the Times-Enterprise Saturday. The honor had been kept a secret from Monahan until the announcement.

Monahan said she could not prevent the tears that flowed, although she realized she was being watched via big-screen monitor by hundreds of people.

The award was presented Friday night at the 100th anniversary annual meeting of the Association County Commissioners of Georgia.

Monahan said the award was particularly meaningful because it was presented at the 100th anniversary ACCG event.

“I feel very special,” she said.

Monahan has been employed by county government for 34 years. She has served as county clerk for 13 years.

Monahan, a Boston resident, was nominated for the award by Mike Stephenson, Thomas County manager.

“Twink is worthy to be recognized as Clerk of the Year due to her commitment to quality public service, her support of the county commission, her professional ethics and her drive, every day, to give her best effort to the people of Thomas County,” Stephenson’s nomination letter said.

The county manager’s letter said Monahan’s attitude can be summed up as: Any job worth doing is worth doing right.

“Her customer service skills are among the best,” Stephenson wrote.

Monahan began working with the county on March 1, 1980, as a records clerk for the Thomas County tax commissioner. She was promoted to deputy warden of administrative services at Thomas County Prison on June 30, 1983. She was promoted to purchasing agent in the county commission office in July 1987.

A decade later, Monahan assumed additional duties of insurance and benefits coordinator. She was promoted to county clerk Jan. 1, 2001.

Monahan has six grandchildren. She is a member of Thomasville First Presbyterian Church and the Thomas County Republican Party.
