New Publix in 2015

THOMASVILLE — Construction will begin in late summer on a large, prototype Publix supermarket to replace the Thomasville Publix that opened 20 years ago.

“It’s one of the largest prototypes built,” said Fred Hand IV, of Hand Properties Inc., the Atlanta developer.

Hand described the store, which will be built next to Lowe’s and front on U.S.19 south, as “the latest and greatest prototype.”

The 54,000-square-foot store will represent a $10 million, 20-plus-year investment in the community, Hand said, adding that the current Publix store is 40,000 square feet.

Groundbreaking for the new store is at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 8.

Site work will begin 30 to 45 days after the groundbreaking, with construction set for late summer and an outside completion date of Aug. 15, 2015.

“We should beat that by a large margin,” Hand said.

The Publix site will include seven local shops, each with 1,400 square feet. Several spaces have been leased.

“It will have a pharmacy drive-through,” Hand said, in reference to the new supermarket.

He said the Thomasville store will be larger than a 45,000-square-foot Publix that opened recently in Valdosta.

The current Thomasville Publix has no room to store inventory, Hand said. “They do extremely well in Thomasville and cannot keep it (the store) stocked,” he explained.

Information about employment numbers, other features of the new store and businesses that will occupy the local shops will be available prior to the Thursday groundbreaking.
