Pot found growing in cramped quarters

THOMASVILLE — Lawmen received a reliable tip that a McMillan Road resident was growing marijuana in his camper. Subsequent surveillance showed the source was right.

Through surveillance at 4857 McMillan Road, Thomas County/Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division agents learned the location of the suspected camper, home of Steven Douglas Johnson, 54.

“We approached the camper, and (Mr.) Johnson answered the door. He said he had a little bit of marijuana in the camper for smoking,” said Kevin Lee, narcotics/vice commander. Johnson turned over a small amount of marijuana.

“Then he told us he had some more in the trailer,” Lee said.

The suspect led officers to 22 marijuana plants — each about one foot tall — being cultivated in a cabinet.

“He had set up a small grow area with lights,” the commander explained.

Lee said the plants eventually would have required transplanting.

“At full maturity, they would have been too big for the camper,” he said.

When fully grown, the plants would have had a value of $1,000 each.

Johns is charged with manufacturing marijuana.
