Class act

MACON — On Saturday, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame will enshrine eight new members, including former Thomasville and Colquitt County head football coach Jim Hughes.

The group also includes James Brooks, Bobby Cremins, Homer Rice, Hollis Stacy, Frank Thomas, Chester Webb and Scott Woerner. All these outstanding contributors to sports were selected by the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Honors Court at its September 2013 meeting.

Hughes compiled a 247-105 record during his 30-year career, including the 1973 and 1974 Class AAA championships while at Thomasville. His 1974 Bulldogs were named national champions by the National Sports News Service.

The ceremony will again by held at the historic Macon City Auditorium in Downtown Macona and will be the finale of a weekend full of events that will begin with the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Golf Classic at Idle Hour Country Club on Friday.

FanFest will be conducted at the museum from 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m. on Saturday. During this free event, the Class of 2014 and previously inducted Hall of Fame members will be on hand to greet fans and sign autographs. Mercer University’s mascot and cheerleaders will also be providing entertatinment.

During the induction ceremony, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Foundation will present Georgia bulldog mascot owner Frank W. “Sonny” Seiler with the Erk Russell Spirit Award. The Spirit Award recognizes contributions to sports that mirror the enthusiasm that Russell brought to coaching football and all of life’s endeavors. Seiler was selected for his dedication to the Georgia Bulldogs as the caretaker and founder of the Uga mascot tradition. He raised and nurtured Uga I through Uga IX and has stay committed to keep this unique tradition alive.
