Brookwood students package meals

THOMASVILLE — The day before Valentine’s Day, Brookwood Middle School students packaged thousands of healthy, nutritious meals for the Kids Against Hunger nonprofit organization to benefit hungry children around the world and in the U.S.A.

“To raise funds to purchase the highly nutritious, vitamin-fortified soy-rice casserole ingredients, our Brookwood students sold Valentine 'Crush Cans,'” explained Middle School Director Raina Cauley. “For $1, students could tell someone they care with a 'Crush Can' soft drink.”

On Feb. 13, the carpets in the center area of Flowers Administration Hall at Brookwood were covered in heavy-duty plastic. On rows of tables, plastic tubs held the nutritious ingredients that the students, wearing plastic gloves with their hair covered, measured, weighed, poured into plastic bags and sealed for boxing in a nearby classroom: high-quality white, long-grain rice; vitamin-fortified crushed soy; a dehydrated blend of six vegetables; and vitamin and mineral powder.

"This was our Middle School's second year working with Kids Against Hunger," Cauley explained. "It was a great day, since 110 students and 12 teachers raised $400 for ingredients, and we packed 6,916 meals in 32 large boxes."

To provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins needed by a malnourished child’s body and mind, food scientists have formulated the program’s meals. The food also accommodates the broad diversity of ethnic tastes and religious differences around the world.

Kids Against Hunger’s meals offer all nine of the essential amino acids required for complete nutrition. The beauty of the food formulation is its simplicity. It is made from four readily available, dry ingredients that are easy to package, keep for long periods, and require only boiling with water to prepare. Despite the simplicity of the food’s content, it is a nutritionally complex and well-balanced meal.
