Red Hills Players to stage ‘Carnival!’

THOMASVILLE — Step right up for three nights only as the Red Hills Players present “Carnival!,” Bob Merrill’s beloved Tony Award-winning musical hits the main stage at Thomasville Center for the Arts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It is directed by Mosisah Mavity, with the music direction of Roman Roman III and the talents of some of the region’s most beloved actors.

A poignant mixture of despair and hope, “Carnival!” Is the story of a young orphan named Lili who wanders into a shabby carnival seeking the glamour of life in a traveling troupe, but who more desperately, is searching for a home. Taken in as an apprentice, Lili meets characters both frightening and friendly, as she becomes the object of a love triangle between an already-involved Marco the Magnificent, and a crippled puppeteer, Paul Berthelet.

“I love this show because it impacts us in such an unexpected way,” said Mavity. “In the carnival, we’re introduced to a bizarre, abrasive counter-culture that just seems so other.  But, once we step into that world, we meet characters who are deeply sympathetic, sometimes even heart-breaking, and we can't help but identify with them,”

The Red Hills Players, who officially banded together last year in conjunction with the Center for the Arts, did so with an allegiance to excellence, exposure and giving back to the region through the power of performing arts. Rebecca Fadell leads the cast of “Carnival” as Lili, joined by Peyton Hodges as Marco and Hananel Mavity as his jealous amour, Rosalie. Erin Grubbs stars as Paul, and Tyler Wold and Stormy Koch costar as the grouchy ringmaster Schlegel and Paul’s assistant, Jacquot.

Equal parts bawdy and tender, this acclaimed production is not to be missed. Tickets to “Carnival!” cost $15 for adults and $10 for students with a valid ID. To purchase tickets or to become a member of the Center for the Arts, visit www.thomasvillearts.org or call 229-226-0588.
