New Bulldogs leader: 'Good coaches, good people'

THOMASVILLE — The new Thomasville High School head coach/athletic director is aware of the school’s sports tradition.

“I know they have good players. I know they have good people,” said Leroy Ryals Jr., who was hired Tuesday by the Thomasville City Board of Education.

Ryals, 42, replaces Richie Marsh, with whom he “competed” when the two coaches were at other schools.

When Ryals, currently head football coach at Clark Central High School in Athens, learned Marsh was leaving THS, he decided to look into the position.

Ryals’ mother has relatives in the Donalsonville-Bainbridge area, another reason he was eager to come to Southwest Georgia.

“I’ve got cousins all over the place over there,” the coach explained.

Darrell Allen, a school board member and radio voice of the THS Bulldogs, approves of the excitement and experience he thinks Ryals will bring to the Bulldogs.

Allen said Ryals’ enthusiasm will carry over to students and to the community.

Andy Jones, a school board member and retired city school system coach, thinks Ryals will bring discipline to THS football and take the program “to where it used to be.”
