Free lecture on Alzheimer’s disease set April 22

THOMASVILLE — The Alzheimer's Association, Georgia Chapter, is presenting a free community lecture for Thomasville area residents on the latest research findings and future studies in Alzheimer's disease by the principal investigator of the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Jacksonville, Fla.

Dr. Neill R. Graff-Radford, MBBCH, FRCP, will present "An Update on Alzheimer's Disease," at noon on April 22 at the Plaza Restaurant, with a complimentary lunch provided by the event's sponsors. Space is limited and reservations are required. Call 1-800-272-3900 to register.

The local event is sponsored by The Law Offices of Dale S. Davidson LLC; Allen Mooney & Barnes, CFS Wealth Management, Hurst Boiler Company, Farmers & Merchants Bank; Commercial Bank; and Flowers Foods.

"We are pleased to bring Dr. Graff-Radford to Thomasville for local residents to hear about studies that he is conducting at the Mayo Clinic," said Bonnie Sayles, South Georgia regional director of programs and services for the Alzheimer's Association.

Attendees may sign up through the association's TrialMatch program to be matched with appropriate research studies to better understand aging and memory issues. Also, Graff-Radford will discuss diet and exercise and other healthy ways people may lower their risks of developing Alzheimer's.

"This lecture is part of the many services we provide to the residents of South Georgia, including 24/7 Helpline counseling, health provider referall and in some cases, caregiver respite reimbursement. Call us for more information at 1-88-272-3900."

Alzheimer’s disease is marked by 5.2 million diagnosed cases in the United States, 120,000 in Georgia and more than 21,000 in the south Georgia region. These numbers are expected to triple in the next 15 years. Seventy percent of all persons in nursing homes have Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. Someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in the U.S. every 69 seconds, and that will increase to 33 percent by mid-century, according to the latest facts and figures released by the Alzheimer's Association.

For more information on the south Georgia region activities and Alzheimer’s and related dementias, visit or call the 24/7 Helpline at 1-800-272-3900.
