Christmas kickoff

THOMASVILLE — One local church is providing a truly “grand” kickoff to the Christmas season in historic downtown Thomasville.

The Worship and Media Ministry of First Baptist Church will present “Christmas at the Keyboard” featuring five grand pianos and the 62 rank Holtkamp Sanctuary organ in concert at 6 p.m. Sunday in the First Baptist Church Sanctuary.

The keyboard artists of First Baptist will present a program of sacred, classical and popular Christmas favorites during the event, which is free and open to the public.

“First Baptist is absolutely delighted to provide this early Christmas present to our community. It will be a unique and memorable evening of worship,” said Rev. Andy Daughtry, Associate Pastor of Worship and Media.

Joining Daughtry at the keyboard that evening will be long-time First Baptist musicians, Margaret Grady and Kathryn Upton and church members, Joshua Allen, Caroline Raybon and Gail Totter. In addition to the church’s instruments, several pianos were rented for the concert, including a fully restored 100 year old Steinway.

While the program will feature all the artists playing together on all the instruments, there will be a mix of duets and trios, and even a piece written specifically for four pianos.

Daughtry said, “There will be something for everyone. We are playing everything from the Hallelujah Chorus to a Charlie Brown Christmas.”

In addition to celebrating the music of the season, Daughtry said concerts like this are key part of the vision and mission of First Baptist.

“We are honored to be a part of this community and concerts like this are a way to contribute to the cultural life of our city. We believe the message of Christmas is one of hope and redemption, and this is a wonderful way to communicate that message,” he said.

For more information on this concert and all the Christmas events at First Baptist, call (229) 228-6800 or visit the church’s website at www.fbcthomasville.com.
