Thomas University plans events to celebrate National Library Week

THOMASVILLE — Today through Saturday, libraries across the nation will celebrate National Library Week, a time to recognize the value of libraries, librarians and library workers. The Thomas University Library will also join in the celebration with events planned to shine a spotlight on this integral resource at TU.

With the theme “Lives change @ your library,” the TU Library is a perfect example. While the library still includes stacks of books and collections of periodicals, there’s also a collection of digital documents available online. This is especially helpful for TU’s online students. The TU Library also features special events to highlight TU’s faculty, students and alumni. One of those is the TU Talks series.

At 2 p.m. Monday, Dr. Bonnie Woodbery, assistant professor of English, and Shannon Woods, assistant professor of Nursing, will present the TU Talk “Teaching in China.” The presentation is open to the public and will be held in the Flowers Foods Executive Classroom inside Smith-Bonvillian Hall. Woodbery and Woods both spent time in China in 2013 teaching classes in TU’s Nursing program.

Also during National Library Week, the TU Library will celebrate student creativity in writing and art with the debut of this year’s Night Hawk Review at 6 p.m. Thursday. The event will include student writers reading some of their works. The event will include poetry readings TU students as well as professional poets Erica Bernhem and Cynie Corie. Bernheim, who lives in Lakeland, Fla., is director of the creative writing program at Florida Southern College. Corie, who lives in Tallahassee, Fla., has been published in the American Poetry Review.

As part of the National Library Week, the TU Library is also forgiving all overdue fines on materials returned between Monday and Saturday.
