Meigs names police chief

THOMASVILLE — Meigs’ new police chief, who took the reins of the town’s law enforcement Wednesday morning, is well aware of recent news reports about Meigs city government.

“We need to concentrate on the positive,” Chief Gary Price said. “We can’t build focusing on the negative.”

Price wants to be an advocate for Meigs law enforcement. Meigs, he said, has been “under attack with negative publicity.”

The new chief thinks he is the best person to bring about a change.

“I want to be part of the restructuring that will bring about positive changes in the community, as well as Meigs Police Department. I embrace the opportunity,” Price explained.

Price, 42, grew up in Albany, where he still resides.

“I’m totally receptive to moving to Meigs,” he said. “I have not found a place to stay.”

Until taking the Meigs job, Price was a sergeant with the Lumpkin Police Department for a year.

Prior to the Lumpkin stint, Price was employed by Albany Police Department for more than 13 years as an investigator in several areas, drug interdictor and canine handler.

While with Albany police, Price was involved in two on-the-job wrecks he said resulted in “a lot of publicity.”

Albany Police Department considered it in the agency’s best interest for Price to leave the department, the officer said.

“I’m totally in support of what they did,” he officer added.

Price thinks he can bring Meigs “through the storm.” “I’ve been there,” he explained.

It is his goal to make Meigs a safe place to live — “in spite of the negative publicity.”

Most Meigs crime involves thefts and assaults. Price said the town has drug activity, but it is a challenge to document the activity and make arrests.

The chief is willing to work with any law enforcement agency to deter drug-related activity in Meigs.

“We’re going to target that area,” he said.

In addition to the chief, Meigs Police Department has two full-time and one part-time officers.

The Meigs chief salary is $35,000 annually.

A Westover High School graduate, Price also graduated from the Tifton Police Academy, earned a certificate in criminal justice at Albany Technical College and has completed a number of professional training courses.
