Fatality undiscovered for two days

THOMASVILLE — A man bow-hunting late Thursday afternoon off Old 179 south of Whigham heard tires squeal and looked for the source of the noise but found nothing.

On Saturday afternoon, a motorist saw sideways skid marks on the highway, stopped to inspect the area and found an overturned vehicle in a deep ditch overgrown with vegetation.

After talking to the hunter, Thomasville Post 12 Georgia State Patrol troopers determined the crash occurred about 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

“It was discovered March 29. It was reported at approximately 2:20 p.m.,” said Sgt. First Class Tommy Peeples, Post 12 commander.

Galisa Jannah Gerald, 25, Calvary, died in the crash.

According to Peeples, Gerald was southbound on 179 driving a 2007 Honda Civic, when she lost control of the vehicle, traveled across the northbound lane and off the east shoulder. The car rotated counterclockwise and overturned onto its right side in the deep ditch on the north side of the road.

The Honda collided with a tree and the ditch.

“She was attempting to negotiate a left-hand curve,” the commander explained. “The driver was unrestrained and was partially ejected out of the right front passenger window.

Information could not be obtained from the Grady County Sheriff’s Office about whether Gerald was reported missing between the time of the wreck and when it was discovered almost 48 hours later.
