City BOE addresses superintendent violations

THOMASVILLE — The Thomasville City Board of Education has learned Superintendent Sabrina Boykins-Everett used her school system e-mail address “to further outside or non-school-related business.”

The superintendent might have violated a policy regarding private activities, according to school board responses to questions submitted to the school board by the Thomasville Times-Enterprise.

Following are Times-Enterprise questions and school board answers:

Q: The school system received an audit finding for the superintendent’s failure to document charges of more than $13,000 made on the school system credit card. Has the school board examined credit card bills to determine that all charges were legitimate? What were the findings?

A: School system operations are audited annually by the State of Georgia Department of Audits. The board reviewed the audit findings and recommendations as they were reported by the state. The board and the superintendent noted the audit reported lack of sufficient documentation on certain charges on the system credit card issued to the superintendent. Upon receipt of such finding, the superintendent provided sufficient documentation for such charges. The documentation appears to be in order, and the superintendent instituted additional procedures to ensure proper documentation in the future. Additionally, the expenses appear to be reasonable and legitimate expenses of a school system and school superintendent. The expenses on the credit card are primarily for office and school supplies, awards to students, appreciation gifts to personnel (e.g. retirement), and travel to state and regional school administrative functions, continuing education and professional development training.
