THOMASVILLE — The second driver involved in a fatal car crash that resulted in two deaths on Monday has turned himself in. Sharon Thompson, 19, is being charged with failure to report an accident with injury.

Minutes before the crash that occurred on South Pinetree Boulevard shortly after midnight, a deputy spotted two vehicles headed south at a high rate of speed on Jackson Street at the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard. The deputy turned to follow the vehicles. He was not actively chasing them but was trying to keep them in his sights.

The deputy followed the taillights of Thompson’s vehicle without realizing that the lead car had crashed. The deputy turned back after receiving a call about the accident.

Michael Bevard, 24, and Damian Brown, 28, were pronounced dead at the scene at 1:08 a.m. Their vehicle hit a tree near Southwestern State Hospital.

Police located Thompson’s black vehicle Monday afternoon. It didn’t show signs of colliding with Bevard and Brown's car.

Later, police made contact with Thompson’s father, who said his son “wasn’t home.” The younger Thompson turned himself in later and was taken to the Thomas County Jail.

He was released on bond on Tuesday.
