Defending the defenseless

THOMASVILLE — Kittens tied together and thrown into water. Baby pigs gutted and crammed into a mailbox. Dogs and cats set on fire. Cats and dogs living in their own waste in cages so small they cannot stand up. A skeletal dog covered in fleas.

These animal cruelty horrors did not take place in a rural, back-woods community, where such practices might not be taken very seriously. They all occurred in Thomas County, and there are photographs to prove it.

About 35 Thomas County citizens — and several from nearby counties — attending a Thursday meeting saw the color photographs. Some people wept.

“This shows how many people care,” Pat Smith, Thomas County animal control director, told the audience.

The event was the first in what is planned as a series of meetings to execute activities to bring attention to and prevent animal cruelty.

Thomas County is not the only community facing the problem. It is everywhere.

“But we can make a dent in it here,” Smith explained.
