The City of Thomasville has officially unveiled its newest service, the Refuel CNG (compressed natural gas) fast-fill station
Located at 1330 W. Jackson St., the Refuel CNG station serves as Thomasville's first publicly available CNG fueling station. The fast-fill station’s four pumps have the capability to top off CNG tanks in nearly the same amount of time it takes to fill a gas or diesel vehicle, the big difference being that CNG costs only $2.20 per gas gallon equivalent.
The station opened to a large crowd, which included elected officials and representatives, local business owners, media outlets and representatives from the Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia.
After a brief presentation, a ribbon-cutting was held marking the station as officially open for business.
City Manager/Utilities Superintendent Steve Sykes demonstrated how quick and easy it is to fuel a CNG vehicle by topping off his dual-fuel Tahoe.
“By making compressed natural gas fueling available in our community, we have given our citizens the option to choose a more cost-effective and cleaner burning alternative to traditional fuels,” Sykes said. “We are already enjoying the benefits of lower fueling costs and decreased vehicle maintenance from our CNG fleet conversion. Now we have a provided a way to extend those benefits to our community.”
The Refuel CNG station is open for public use. Anyone with a vehicle that runs on compressed natural gas may use the pumps to fuel their vehicle.
During the grand opening ceremony, the Refuel CNG station was also recognized for garnering statewide attention when it was awarded the 2013 Project of the Year Award for the Southern Region of Georgia, by the Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia during their annual meeting earlier this year.
