Battling for first

Thomasville freshman Margo Rainey battles for the ball with Fitzgerald’s Yuli Pardo, left, and Shyann Dorough during a game at Veterans Memorial Stadium Tuesday night. Rainey scored both of Thomasville’s goals in the 2-0 win.

The Thomasville Bulldogs girls soccer team put itself in a prime position for the region title with a 2-0 victory over Fitzgerald Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Bulldogs controlled the ball for most of the first half, but couldn’t find the back of the net as they went to half tied at 0. A golden opportunity came for Fitzgerald with six minutes left, but solid defensive footwork cleared it.

Margo Rainey staked Thomasville (7-4-1, 4-1 Region 1-AA) to a lead 42 seconds into the second half. She scored again later for cushion room. Senior Daniella Pistelli had an assist on a goal.

She and the two other seniors, Rebecca Jane (RJ) White and Zombria Morrow, were honored between games on senior night.

The win puts Thomasville into first place, dropping Fitzgerald (11-4-1, 4-2) from the top. A win against Berrien (5-5-1, 3-2) Thursday in the region finale would lock up the No. 1 seed.

Game time is 5:30 p.m. at Berrien.
